The History of the Marshalltown Softball Complex

The Marshalltown South 6th Street Softball Complex has been a cornerstone of the local softball community for decades and holds a unique place in softball history. The complex was constructed in 1977 and 1978 on the site of a flood control landfill and officially opened in June of 1979. Remarkably, the facility was built and continues to be improved through player contributions, donations, concession revenue, advertising, sponsorships, and gate receipts. No city funds were used to build or develop the complex, a source of pride for the Marshalltown softball community.

Since opening, the complex has served thousands of players and hosted more than 125 teams across multiple leagues. Throughout the years, Marshalltown has offered a variety of programs, including men's, women's, coed, youth, and even a popular "Midnight League." The Marshalltown 16-inch softball league has long been recognized as one of the premier leagues in the state of Iowa.

The South 6th Street Complex is honored to be the first softball facility outside of Illinois to be recognized as a "Field of Dreams" by the Chicago 16 Inch Hall of Fame. This recognition reflects Marshalltown's long-standing commitment to preserving and growing the unique tradition of 16-inch softball.

The complex has also earned a reputation as a premier tournament destination. Since opening, it has hosted ten A.S.A. National 16-inch Championships and welcomed many legendary teams, including the Whips, Touch, Lettuce, Puglise, 45's, and Flash. These events brought some of the best players in the country to Marshalltown and helped fuel the continued growth and popularity of 16-inch softball throughout Iowa.

Each year, the Marshalltown Softball Association hosts the Clincher Classic, one of Iowa's most respected softball tournaments. The event attracts top teams from across Iowa and the Midwest, including many teams from the Chicago area, and continues to showcase the rich softball tradition that exists in Marshalltown.

Today, the complex is operated and maintained by the Marshalltown Softball Association Board of Directors. Representing multiple leagues and divisions, the board is responsible for league operations, tournaments, facility improvements, and the continued growth of the sport in Marshalltown. Through the dedication of volunteers, players, sponsors, and community supporters, the Marshalltown Softball Complex continues to thrive and provide opportunities for generations of softball players to come.

Carpet Country Rollers: Marshalltown's National Champions

Few teams have left a bigger mark on Marshalltown softball history than the Carpet Country Rollers.

The team was formed in the fall of 1991 when Tim Walker and Brad Van Meter set out to build a team that could compete at the highest level of 16-inch softball. Drawing players from several successful Marshalltown teams and securing sponsorship from Carpet Country, the Rollers quickly became one of the most respected teams in Iowa.

Over the next several seasons, the team developed a reputation for toughness, teamwork, and a commitment to the game that reflected the spirit of Marshalltown softball. The Rollers captured tournament championships across the Midwest and consistently competed against many of the best teams in the country.

Their defining moment came during Labor Day weekend in 1995 at the National 16-Inch Softball Tournament in Mt. Prospect, Illinois. After battling through one of the most competitive fields in tournament history, Carpet Country reached the National Championship against Prime Time.

Facing a 5-2 deficit with two outs in the top of the seventh inning of the deciding championship game, the Rollers appeared to be on the verge of defeat. Instead, they produced one of the greatest comebacks in 16-inch softball history. A series of clutch hits by Brian Keeney, Brad Van Meter, Mike McCune, Rick Barnes, Greg Van Cleave, and Craig Hughes fueled a four-run rally that gave Marshalltown the lead. The Rollers then retired Prime Time in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the National Championship.

The victory remains one of the proudest accomplishments in Marshalltown softball history and cemented the Carpet Country Rollers as one of Iowa's legendary 16-inch teams.

Many members of the team went on to become Hall of Fame players and continued contributing to the sport for decades. Their success helped strengthen Marshalltown's reputation as one of the premier 16-inch softball communities in the country and remains an important chapter in the history of the Marshalltown Softball Association.
